Seasonal allergies can sneak up and take the quality out of daily life. Oftentimes, even inside the comfort of our homes, we feel as though we cannot escape the sneezing and the sniffles. A good, but often overlooked question to ask ourselves is, “How good is the air quality in my home?” Of course we buy air filters for our HVAC systems, but are these doing a good enough job? To keep the air quality safe and reduce the risk of allergies affecting you in your home we recommend every house to have a HEPA filtration system with UV lights.

What is HEPA Filtration & UV Lights?

HEPA is a type of pleated air filtration which utilizes three mechanisms to trap and capture particles. Molecules that are smaller than 0.1 microns collide with each other in the maze of pleated filtration fibers slowing their travel through the filter. This is the first mechanism known as diffusion. Diffusion makes these molecules more likely to stick to a fiber as it passes through the filter in the moving air. When a particle sticks to a fiber it is called interception, and is the second mechanism process. Impaction occurs with larger molecules. Instead of attaching to a fiber like its smaller counterparts, the larger molecules embed themselves directing into the fiber. HEPA stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air (Filter)”. These filters are known to remove up to 99.97% of dust, mold, pollen, bacteria, and any airborne particles including viruses and carbon dust, and are the best air filters available.

In the case of viruses, the Hepa air filter collects the viruses and then UV lights which are attached to the filter destroy the virus. When viruses are exposed to the UV light the DNA or RNA of the virus is changed making it harmless and unable to replicate itself. Ultraviolet light disinfection of germs has also been used in water purification, and multiple peer reviewed studies have been conducted showing the safety and efficacy of UV light use in water and air filtration systems.

Why?

HEPA Filtration and UV Lights have many benefits. Not only can they put your seasonal allergies aside for a more enjoyable day, but they can even reduce the odor in your home from mildew and even pets. Getting rid of those unpleasant odors is fast as HEPA filters purify the air in rooms quickly. Small rooms take around 30 minutes to one hour to purify, while larger rooms take two to four hours. Because breathing in clean, virus free air is not only vital for our health, but also our comfort in everyday life, we recommend one for every home!
